Anti-Etch Coating vs. Marble Sealer

Sealer vs.
Anti-Etch Coating

Marble sealers soak into the stone and resist stains. An anti-etch coating sits on top of it and resists acid. They are not the same product, and they solve different problems. Here is the honest difference.

The Difference

Traditional Sealer Do-It-Yourself, Reapplied Often StainZero Anti-Etch Professionally Applied, Permanent
What it protects against Staining only. Acids still etch the surface. Both staining and etching. Resists lemon, vinegar, wine, ketchup, coffee and more.
How it works Soaks into the stone's pores to repel liquids from within. Forms a crystal-clear protective layer on top of the stone.
Who applies it You, with a store-bought product. A factory-trained StainZero Certified Applicator only.
Maintenance Reapplied every 6–12 months, indefinitely. No reapplication. Wipe with a pH-neutral cleaner.
Effect on appearance Usually invisible, but can darken or dull stone over time. Crystal clear; preserves veining. Slightly deepens white marble.
Warranty None. It's a consumable you keep buying. Lifetime Limited Warranty against stains and etch marks.
Best for Low-traffic surfaces and granite, which is less acid-sensitive. Marble, limestone, travertine and onyx countertops, islands, vanities and tables.

Comparison reflects the typical performance of penetrating sealers versus a professionally applied anti-etch coating. Results vary with stone type, use and care.

In Depth

Why sealer alone isn't enough for marble

Sealer protects against stains, not acids

A penetrating sealer works inside the stone. It fills pores so liquids bead up on the surface, which helps prevent staining. But it does not stop acid from reacting with the calcium carbonate in marble. That reaction is etching: the dull, whitish mark left behind by lemon juice, vinegar, wine or a spilled cocktail.

Because the sealer lives below the surface, the acid never has to get past it. It contacts the stone directly and etches it anyway.

An anti-etch coating is a barrier on top

StainZero is different. It is a crystal-clear coating that cures into a protective layer on top of the stone. When acidic liquid lands on it, the acid never reaches the marble beneath, so there is nothing to etch.

In StainZero testing, the cured coating resisted lemon juice, vinegar, wine, ketchup, coffee and even battery acid. Because it is a permanent layer rather than a consumable, there is nothing to reapply.
